Puppy School @ Double Bay Vet Clinic
The arrival of a new puppy is an exciting
time for everyone. It is a fun time, but it is also a hugely important time in
your pup’s development.
In fact, the first 16 weeks of a puppy’s life are all about learning. The experiences your puppy has now will go on to shape how they behave when they are older, good or bad. The wrong experience now can lead to a life long problem like fear of children or other dogs. So it is very important to learn how to look after your puppy properly and help it learn good things to prevent problem behaviour when your puppy becomes an adult dog.
The Double Bay Vet Puppy School is a fun and safe environment where our resident dog trainer Liarne Henry and our staff will be on hand to help you and your puppy learn some vital life skills at this delicate age.
Puppy school course details
The course runs for
four weeks allowing your puppy to socialise with people and other dogs of
similar age.
Throughout the entire course our dog trainer Liarne points out calming signals your puppy uses when meeting new dogs, teaching you the language of your dog and how to work with it. This is of great importance as it helps your puppy learn how to behave with other dogs, people and children, but also teaches you what your dog is communicating.
During the course you will learn:
- Basic obedience: How to make your puppy sit, stand and lie down.
- How to stop your puppy chewing the wrong things.
- How to toilet train your puppy.
- How to effective and safely introduce your puppy to other dogs.
- Advanced obedience: How to teach your puppy to leave things, come back and walk to heel.
Plus at the end of each session one of our vets or nurses will demonstrate some crucial skills like how to check for fleas and ticks. We’ll also cover some basic first aid skills to use in an emergency.
Our team use only positive reinforcement training methods with praise and treats.
At the end of each class there will be ample time for you to ask questions of any of the pet experts on hand.
Course notes are provided at the end of each session to help reinforce the lessons learned.

Puppy school 'graduate' feedback
'Attending puppy school has been a great learning experience for my
dog 'Jet' and me! Puppy school has taught us positive ways of training
our dogs in a friendly structured environment. We've been able to
socialise with other dogs as well as learning all the basic obedience
training. It has re-enforced the good things I was already doing, and
encouraged me to stop doing things that might have been leading my puppy
astray! Going to Puppy School at the vet clinic ensures my dog has an
ongoing positive experience rather than it just being about vaccinations.
The advice is presented in a professional caring environment which has
left me 100% satisfied with our experience.''
